Teacher Johan Teterissa is serving a 15-year prison sentence for leading a peaceful public protest in front of PresidentSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono, during which a flag of Mollucan independence was raised. Of the 21 other protestors arrestedwith him, one is awaiting trial, and 20 have been sentenced to between seven and 20 years' imprisonment, as part of asystematic crackdown on pro-independence activities in Maluku province. Since the start of 2007, at least another 48people involved in some way with similar flag-raising ceremonies have been arrested or imprisoned on charges of "rebellion."
